Why the UK is So Hot This Week!
Fidelis News – Kids | 12 August 2025
It’s not just you, this week really is hotter than usual across much of the UK! The Met Office, which is the UK’s weather service, says we’re having a “heatwave.” That means the temperature stays very warm for several days in a row, even at night.
How Hot Is It?
In some parts of England, the temperature could reach over 30°C (86°F). That’s warmer than some holiday spots in Spain! Even places in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are feeling much warmer than usual.
Why Is It Happening?
The hot weather is caused by warm air travelling up from southern Europe and staying over the UK. Sometimes, when the wind doesn’t change, this warm air can hang around for days.
What’s Being Done?
The UK Health Security Agency has given a special “heat alert.” This is a way of reminding people to take extra care, especially young children, older people, and pets.
Staying Safe in the Heat
- Drink lots of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day (11am to 3pm).
- Wear a hat and light, loose clothing.
- Use sunscreen to protect your skin.
- Never leave pets or people in cars on warm days.
Fun Fact
The hottest temperature ever recorded in the UK was 40.3°C (104.5°F) in July 2022!
When Will It Cool Down?
Forecasters think the temperatures will start to drop by the weekend. That means cooler evenings and maybe even some rain to help the gardens and parks.
Enjoy the sunshine, but remember to stay safe and cool!
