Ukraine Support Solidified as Starmer Meets Zelenskiy and ‘Coalition of the Willing’ Lays Out Security Path

By Fidelis News Staff | 14 August 2025

Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to London today in a high-profile show of unity, reaffirming the UK’s “unwavering” commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The visit comes at a pivotal moment, just days before the highly anticipated Trump–Putin summit in Alaska, where global security arrangements, including Ukraine’s future, are expected to dominate discussions.

Starmer: “The UK Will Stand Firm”

During a joint press conference, Starmer said:

“Britain will stand firm alongside Ukraine for as long as it takes. Russia’s war of aggression cannot be rewarded, and our collective security depends on ensuring Ukraine prevails.”

He pledged continued military aid, humanitarian assistance, and economic support, stressing that peace must be on terms acceptable to Ukraine and “not imposed by outside powers.”

Zelenskiy thanked the UK for its leadership, particularly in providing advanced weaponry and training for Ukrainian troops. He also urged NATO members to accelerate the delivery of promised defence systems.

‘Coalition of the Willing’ Pushes for Robust Guarantees

The UK, France, and Germany, acting as co-chairs of the so-called “Coalition of the Willing”, issued a joint statement calling for “credible, enforceable, and long-term security guarantees” for Ukraine.

This group of allied nations is working to secure an international agreement that would commit members to ongoing military and economic support, even if Ukraine is not yet a full NATO member.

Their statement explicitly warned against any premature ceasefire that could freeze the conflict on current battle lines, a scenario many fear would embolden Russia and weaken Ukraine’s negotiating position.

Putin Praises US Diplomacy

In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin described recent U.S. diplomatic outreach as “sincere,” signalling cautious optimism ahead of his meeting with Donald Trump.

While Putin did not directly comment on today’s UK–Ukraine talks, Russian officials have previously criticised Western security guarantees as “escalatory” and contrary to peace efforts.

Critical Negotiations Ahead

Diplomatic momentum is building ahead of the weekend summit in Alaska, which will see Trump, Putin, and other leaders discuss security in Eastern Europe. The outcome could define the geopolitical balance for years to come.

For the UK, today’s meeting reinforced its position as one of Kyiv’s most reliable partners. Analysts say the combination of public solidarity and behind-the-scenes alliance-building sends a clear message to both allies and adversaries: support for Ukraine is not fading.
