Energy Watch: Winter Bill Rises, Preparing for Possible Blackouts & Smarter Ways to Save

As autumn approaches, UK households are facing a fresh wave of energy concerns. Ofgem will soon hike the price cap, leaving families wondering whether winter means higher costs, blackout risks, or both. Here’s what you need to know and how to prepare.

Energy Bills on the Rise

Forecasts suggest a 1% rise in the energy price cap this October. This means the average dual-fuel household will see annual bills tick up to around £1,737, up from £1,720. Although seemingly modest, campaigners warn even this increase could tip over 12 million households into greater fuel poverty. That includes nearly 5 million already spending more than 20% of their income on utility bills.

Support Options You Can Still Use

Multiple relief schemes remain available this winter:

  • Winter Fuel Allowance (£300) – For pensioners
  • Warm Home Discount (£150) – Expanded to reach more low-income households
  • Household Support Fund – Distributed via local councils for urgent help
  • Supplier aid – British Gas has pledged a £140M fund, Octopus £30M, EDF and others similar packages

Reach out to your energy provider or local authority soon if you believe you’re eligible.

Fixed vs Variable Tariffs: Which Protects You?

With steady uncertainty ahead, fixed-rate deals have surged in popularity. As of April, 35% of households had switched to fixed terms, compared to just 15% a year earlier. These deals can lock in favourable rates even when price caps tick up, but may penalise households if rates fall. Experts say if the outlook is still unpredictable, a fixed plan could shield you from surprise hikes.

Blackouts: A Real but Manageable Risk

Britain’s electricity grid is showing strain. A recent resilience report suggested the UK could face regional power outages especially during peak demand or severe weather. To counter this, the government maintains “Programme Yarrow,” a contingency plan for up to week-long outages across the grid.

Energy providers advise every household to prepare a basic emergency kit: torch, battery radio, phone chargers, bottled water and to unplug non-essential devices during alerts. If someone in your home relies on medical equipment, contact your local Priority Services Register.

Long-Term Solutions: Clean Energy & Efficiency

Beyond short-term fixes, the government is also betting on the future. The new state-backed body, Great British Energy, launched this year, is tasked with investing in clean power and infrastructure. It will help fund renewables and upgrades that could reduce reliance on volatile fossil fuels and ultimately lower bills.

Meanwhile, the Great British Insulation Scheme (ECO+) is live until March 2026, targeting energy-efficiency upgrades like loft and wall insulation especially in poorer households. Done properly, this could save residents hundreds annually and reduce overall UK energy use.

What You Can Do Today

  • Compare fixed vs variable tariffs now  getting ahead of price cap changes can save hundreds.
  • Apply for existing government and supplier assistance heating funds immediately.
  • Build an emergency kit and register for priority support if needed.
  • Check eligibility for the insulation scheme, even small investments can reduce future bills.
